Oh yes, it's football season! Having older brothers meant I spent a lot (really most!) of my childhood at sporting events, and football was definitely a fan favorite for the males in my home! At least in the olden days, before cable TV and all the specialized sports networks, we only had to watch football on the weekend and on Monday nights. Now it's football 24/7!  St. Louis was home to the football Cardinals of the National Football League from 1960-1987. The following year the Cardinals left St. Louis for a new home in Phoenix, Arizona.  After several years of trying to secure another NFL team for St. Louis, the fans were rewarded when the Los Angeles Rams made St. Louis their new home in 1996.  Success followed and our Rams under the leadership of quarterback Kurt Warner won the 1999 Super Bowl Championship! Since the Rams football team arrived in St. Louis the franchise has seen many coaches as well as owners come and go.  The lack of involvement by the current ownership has fans worried for the future of the Rams in St. Louis. But, guess what? We don't have to give all our allegiance to our professional team. There are many local and state high school and college teams to cheer on as well. Of course, we are Mizzou fans here in St. Louis, but many of us also follow other favorite teams such as the fighting Irish of Notre Dame, USC Trojans, and personal favorite Mississippi State Bulldogs! Festive Holiday Drink Ideas Needed!

So I'm thinking ahead to Thanksgiving and I need your suggestions. I love hosting holidays in my home, and I especially love decorating the holiday table. I also try to use my "good" china, silver, and crystal whenever possible. I figure I didn't put it on my wedding registry just so I can look at it setting so pretty in the china cabinet, so why not use it! And, over the years I have collected many festive centerpieces and serving dishes which add so much to the holiday table decorum. The menus are basically the same year after year except for the varying (and sometimes experimental!) side dishes. Turkey is always served on Thanksgiving, filet mignon steaks and roast beef are the main entrees for Christmas, and Easter brings a variety of barbecued meats including chicken, ribs, and hamburgers for the kiddos. For the accompanying side dishes I like to make recipes that can be prepared in advance, refrigerated overnight, and then baked, microwaved, or tossed just prior to serving. This plan allows me extra time to visit with our guests. Additionally, another time saver is having an alcoholic punch for the adults and a non-alcoholic drink for the children (and adults too!) readily available for the guests. These drinks can be made in batches ahead of the big day and also allows for easy serving of drinks. Anyone can just help themselves when a refill is needed. I've served a red wine sangria punch for Christmas and a white wine sangria punch garnished with lemons, lime, and strawberries at Easter. The kiddos always request frozen non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris which I keep in the freezer year round! I also make sure to have several cans of whipped cream available to top off the frozen daiquiri. And depending on the holiday, the kids also love when festive stirrers and straws are included with the drink.  The local Dollar Tree Store is a good source for holiday drink accessories.  I've even found adorable bunny glasses to serve the frozen drinks. They look so cute when topped with a mound of whipped cream!  So this year  I'm looking for a special alcoholic and also a non-alcoholic drink appropriate for the Thanksgiving holiday that can be made in advance and can easily be served. I did find a recipe for an apple cider punch that looks interesting and tasty, but would love your suggestions too. Oh No! It's Back To School!

Geez... the first day of school comes earlier and earlier every year! When I was a kid we never went back to school until the beginning of September. The academic year ended the first week of June and began the day after Labor Day. I remember those Labor Day evenings when it was the tradition to scrub off the summer dirt. We had a full three months off for summer vacation, so by this time we were definitely ready to head back to the classroom (I'm sure my parents were ready too!).  I believe the difference in our schedule was that we never had a Fall or Spring break, but rather only two weeks off during the Christmas holidays. I liked it this way...work, work, work, then play, play, play! I guess too it really needed to be this way since we didn't have air conditioning in the schools (nor at home) back then. It would have been unbearable attending class in the oppressive summer heat in St. Louis.  Now days the schools in our area are air conditioned and the first day of school is earlier and earlier each year. Most of the neighboring school districts have a start date some time during the first two weeks of August. So last year I confessed that I don 't like the Fourth of July holiday. Now, please don't get me wrong... I love celebrating my awesome country and I love most of the festivities of the day, but I just don't like the fireworks. They.scare.me! So there, I said it..I'm afraid of fireworks! I am excited, though, that Independence Day falls on a Friday this year, and therefore we have an extended three day weekend! Friday will be all about family with generations of loved ones gathering for the annual summer barbeque. Saturday, my immediate family will cheer on the St. Louis Cardinals from The Budweiser Brew House Deck at the new Ballpark Village.  The Brew House Rooftop is an awesome venue for watching the baseball game and I'm so excited to share this special day with my family! I'm excited too for the stadium hot dogs and nachos, a MUST for any Cardinal home game! Sunday will definitely be a day for rest and recuperation! School's Out For Summer... Almost!

The school year is about over, I guess! Since we had so many snow days this past winter the local school districts had to extend the school year by several days so I'm not really sure when the last day is for everyone in our area. Well, the extra days work for me allowing extra time to figure out my teacher appreciation gifts. I'm also thinking about some end of school year/graduation shirts for the little ones. In my experience, my kiddos and their friends love wearing their very own personalized tees.  The shirts for preschoolers and kindergarten graduates are so cute!  I love the design featuring the little boy or girl graduate and especially love that you can customize the skin tone and hair color. There is also a more generic design with a grad cap and diploma which can also be personalized with your little graduate's name. I think the adorable end of year hoot owl shirt is so funny too and perfect for any young school aged child! Now, it's a little more difficult deciding on a teacher appreciation gift since I don't really interact on a regular basis with the teachers to know their personal likes and dislikes.  For me, I really love the tote bags since I always have way too many things to lug around! So I think my kids' teachers might very well like a personalized tote with possibly a matching acrylic tumbler or water bottle as a special thank you for a great year. I Like Big Trucks

When I was a teenager (seems like a lifetime ago!) I would on occasion babysit for my cousin's son, John. When he was a young tyke he loved trucks above all else! I think his first words weren't momma or dadda, but rather truck! When I would watch him all he wanted to do was look out the window and wait for the trucks to pass by.  Luckily it was a busy street so there was never a worry that trucks of all shapes and sizes would be there to entertain him.  He was so excited to see the large semi trucks, the stop and go trash truck, and the clippity-cloppity dump truck. For hours, it seemed, he would repeat the same word..."truck, truck, truck!" How I wish back in the day it would have been possible to have had a personalized shirt made with John's beloved trucks on it. Wee Bit Irish

Yes, I'm proud to say I'm Irish! Well, I think everyone is at least a "wee bit Irish" every year on March 17th! Also, I feel so very blessed to have visited the homeland...the Emerald Isle...my Ireland! Kissing the Blarney Stone was a dream come true (albeit a bit scary!). I actually had no idea the famous Blarney Stone was at the top of Blarney Castle and that I would have to lie down on my back and kiss it upside down! A rather traumatic moment, but as a result I was given the "gift of eloquence" or in other words the "gift of gab!" (Hmm... I thought I already had it!) A real treat was enjoying a Guinness while watching authentic Irish jig dancing at Ireland's oldest pub, The Brazen Head.  It was established in 1198, and just think we are Facebook friends today! While I can't be in Dublin to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year, family and friends will be living it up St. Louis style. When I was a kiddo Western movies and TV shows were very popular!  One of my most favorite television shows was "Texas Bruce and the Wrangler Club."  It was locally produced by KSD-TV and aired after school Monday thru Friday.  And, we would even dress in our cowboy and cowgirl hats, shirts, and boots to watch the show!  However, little cowboys and cowgirls from the area could also visit the set and actually view the show live!  I always wanted to be on the show, but sadly never had the opportunity. The popular song "All You Need Is Love" is credited to the Lennon-McCartney partnership and was first performed live in 1967 by The Beatles.  John Lennon was lead singer and background vocals were sung by Paul McCartney and George Harrison. I am from the era that considered The Beatles to be the absolute best in the music industry, and also feel very fortunate that I was able to attend Paul McCartney's "On The Run Tour" concert when it played at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis in November 2012.  The set list featured various love songs including "All My Loving," "And I Love Her," followed by "My Valentine." Fang Dangle Pocket Pillow

Well here goes! I very much dislike the dentist (nothing personal Dr. Miller)... but I just don't like having anyone's hands in my mouth. Don't like hearing the drill. Don't like the picking that occurs with teeth cleaning. Don't like Novacaine shots. Don't like having a crown, root canal, nor a tooth extraction! So there you have it! There is really nothing at all I like about a trip to the dentist. Sadly, I have inflicted my dental phobias upon my daughter. So it wasn't much fun last week when she had to have a tooth pulled. I talked to her a

Santa Claus is coming to town! This classic holiday song has been a favorite of mine (and so many other children and adults alike) from the very first time I heard my mom sing it to me. It has remained a best-loved song as I have shared it countless times with my own children and so many nieces, nephews and friends. The original song was written in 1934 by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie, and it was an immediate hit!  Over the years it has been recorded by various artists including Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra in 1935 and in more recent years by Bruce Springsteen and of course, the ever popular version by Ms. Mariah Carey.  During the holidays (and depending on the situation it may not have even been the holidays!), my mom would remind my siblings and me that "He's making a list, Checking it twice, Gonna find out who's naughty or nice." Well this little reminder was definitely a catalyst to be extra nice so I wouldn't find any coal in my stocking on Christmas morning! Triathlon Cheerleader T-Shirt

Yesterday was the St. Louis Rock 'N Roll Marathon.  About 13,000 runners participated and thousands of fans including newborns and the elderly lined the streets to root for their runners.  A few weeks past I was in Chicago and cheered on the runners in the annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  There were runners from all 50 states and over 100 countries. I was one of the approximately 1.5 million spectators.  A moment of silence was held before the race began to memorialize and honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.  Many of the runners and their cheerleaders wore shirts, shoes, bracelets, or carried banners in support of Boston.  In response to the tragedy in Boston, security has been ramped up at similar events throughout our country. Although the presence of uniformed police, undercover agents, and Homeland security was very evident in Chicago it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the ginormous crowd.  Security was also tight in St. Louis this weekend.  In addition to the Rock 'N Roll Marathon, the St. Louis Cardinals are also hosting games 3, 4 and 5 of baseball's World Series and our opponents are the Boston Red Sox.  So if you plan to attend one of the upcoming marathons or triathlons it is always fun to bring along your fans. The runners are energized by the encouragement of the crowd and how fun would it be to have the little ones wearing personalized tees to cheer on mommy and/or daddy?  Zoey's Attic can customize any shirt with your team name and colors, wording, or just about anything you need!

It's the last day of September and it seems all the stars have aligned perfectly! That is, if you're a sports fan! I love this time of year when so many of my favorite sporting events overlap. We have the St. Louis Cardinals finishing in first place in the National League Central Division and heading to the NL Division Series later this week. Our hockey team, the St. Louis Blues, has completed pre-season play and the opening game here at home is also this week. Then, of course, we are home to the St. Louis Rams football team. Well, let's just say I like football a lot and follow the home team, but the Rams play so far this year is making it a bit difficult to be an avid fan.
