Who is this St. Patrick guy and why all the fuss with his day? St. Patrick was a Christian missionary and is known as the Patron Saint of Ireland.  He was originally from Scotland, born in 367 A.D.  When Patrick was sixteen years old he was captured and enslaved by Irish pirates. After six years Patrick was able to escape his captors and eventually made his way back to his family. He then studied for the priesthood and later returned to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick established many churches throughout Ireland and is also credited with several miracles. For example, legend has it that Patrick is responsible for driving the snakes out of Ireland. He has even been credited with resurrecting men from the dead. In addition, St. Patrick is believed to have taught the Irish about the Holy Trinity by using a three leaf shamrock. The leaves of the shamrock represented the Christian teaching of three persons in one God. Interestingly, Patrick has never been formally canonized a Saint by a Pope of the Catholic church. During the first millennium of the Catholic Church, there was no formal canonization process. However, Patrick's name is found in the list of Saints. March 17th commemorates the date of St. Patrick's death. The day is not only a religious holy day, but also celebrated as a cultural holiday by people all around the world. On March 17th the world goes green from Dublin to Tokyo! It goes without saying that just about everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

Wee Bit Irish

Yes, I'm proud to say I'm Irish! Well, I think everyone is at least a "wee bit Irish" every year on March 17th! Also, I feel so very blessed to have visited the homeland...the Emerald Isle...my Ireland! Kissing the Blarney Stone was a dream come true (albeit a bit scary!). I actually had no idea the famous Blarney Stone was at the top of Blarney Castle and that I would have to lie down on my back and kiss it upside down! A rather traumatic moment, but as a result I was given the "gift of eloquence" or in other words the "gift of gab!" (Hmm... I thought I already had it!) A real treat was enjoying a Guinness while watching authentic Irish jig dancing at Ireland's oldest pub, The Brazen Head.  It was established in 1198, and just think we are Facebook friends today! While I can't be in Dublin to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year, family and friends will be living it up St. Louis style. It may be Valentine's Day, but I've already set my sights on the next big celebration! You probably have guessed what I'm referring to...as the saying goes..."Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!"  Is this true for you? If so, and if you live in or near St. Louis, then you really have the luck of the Irish because we celebrate St. Patty's Day not just once, but twice! The city hosts festivities each year on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) hosts another celebration on March 17th, the real St. Pat's Day.  The St. Louis celebration begins on Saturday at the Top of the Morn with a 5 mile run/walk event that winds through the downtown region. Then at 12 noon come "rain or shine" the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade begins with its approximate 120 units including marching bands, floats, character balloons, and family clans.  Irish entertainment continues throughout the day at a special "Irish Village" set up in the midst of all the activity.  Then after recovering from all the excitement, food, and drink it's time to gear up for the next big St. Patty's Day celebration!  On the actual feast day of St. Patrick, March 17th, the AOH hosts another fabulous parade that occurs in the Irish neighborhood of St. Louis affectionately known as Dogtown.  The residents of Dogtown consider their community "a province of the Republic of Ireland."  The St. Patrick's Day Parade has a neighborly touch with lots of Irish dancing, bands, and family units marching proudly and displaying their family crests. Booths with food and drink can be found along the route with traditional servings of corned beef, cabbage, and beer in abundance.
