Personalized Graduation Tees & Gifts!

When I was a young school girl there was no internet. I had absolutely no knowledge of computers and certainly had no idea of how this advancement in technology would impact everyday life in the future! It's really difficult for me to imagine my life now without being "connected" via the internet! Our kiddos surely live in a vastly different world than I did when I was a youngster. We actually shopped in a real brick and mortar store as there was no online shopping in those days! Our parents took us to the local discount store, either Spartans (long since closed) or K-Mart for our play clothes. Famous Barr, which is now a Macy's, and Stix, Baer and Fuller (currently a Dillard's) were the nearby department stores. We only shopped at these stores for special occasions! This is where we went to purchase our outfits for family weddings, Christmas, or Easter. Then of course every August we went into the city to visit Wilhelms, a specialty shop which carried our school uniforms. We did have a few out-of-uniform days during the school year and if you wanted to wear personalized clothing you had to have your mom or grandma make them for you. I was certainly very fortunate that my Aunt Mary Jane was an excellent seamstress. She could make anything! When I graduated from the 8th grade she made me two beautiful A-line dresses. One was a sleeveless blue paisley patterned dress to wear to summer events, the other a short sleeved tan corduroy dress with an orange and rust flowered pattern to wear to the upcoming Fall dances. I couldn't have been any happier with this special gift my Aunt made just for me!

So in the "olden days" we didn't have anything personalized with our name unless mom made it, and that meant a trip to the local fabric shop to purchase iron-on patches. After carefully placing the selected decals and letters of our name on the shirt Mom would affix them with a very hot iron. Unfortunately, the personalization would peel off the shirt after its first washing. Embroidery was another method of personalizing our clothing, but you had to know someone who could embroider! Back then it was done by hand and not by a machine.

Oh, and there were no preschools when I was a little girl so there was never a need for a preschool graduation outfit. However, the last day of kindergarten (1/2 day only) was dress up day! How special it would have been to wear a custom created shirt acknowledging a successful completion to my first year of formal education! I would have been so ahead of the times... a real fashionista! That's right! We are so pleased to announce that Zoey's Attic has officially opened its new brick-and-mortar retail location at 20 N Gore Avenue in Webster Groves, MO.  Store hours are 9:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday; 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday; and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Our Zoey's Attic online shop was officially launched in November 2006 by Erin Delanty, aka Zoey! The inspiration for the website came shortly after Erin and her husband, Tim, welcomed the birth of their first child, Bridget, in August of that year. In May 2008, Bridget became a big sister herself and the inspiration continues! After searching unsuccessfully online for unique newborn baby bodysuits and tees and listening to family and friends who were having difficulty finding those very special one-of-a-kind big brother / big sister shirts and matching sibling sets, Erin decided to use her background as a graphic designer and web developer to design her very own line of products. Zoey's Attic Coming Soon to Webster Groves, MO!

Exciting news! Zoey's Attic is coming soon to Webster Groves, MO, a suburb of Saint Louis and home to Zoey's Attic owners, Erin and Tim! This community was also the childhood home of writer Jonathan Franzen, and other notable Webster residents over the years include Cardinal and Cub baseball announcer Harry Caray; Ivory Crockett, the 100 yard dash world record holder; beloved comedienne Phyllis Diller; supermodel Karlie Kloss; national news personalities Russ Mitchell and Bob Dotson; and former FBI and CIA Direction William Webster. And now, home to Zoey's Attic!

We are two lifelong Webster Groves residents and we're so happy to bring our successful internet based personalized gifts business to Old Webster! We plan to open our new brick & mortar shop at 20 N. Gore Avenue in late Fall 2015. We will be occupying the space that previously was home to Apple of Your Eye (a favorite shop from my childhood!). Holiday Ornaments

Well, it's October, and of course I'm already thinking about the holidays... and NOT Halloween and NOT Thanksgiving, but rather Christmas! There is always so much to accomplish before the parties and festivities begin. It's actually quite exhausting thinking about shopping, wrapping, decorating inside and out, trimming the tree, planning menus, baking cookies, addressing holiday cards and so much more! The list goes on and on, but I truly love every minute of it!

As I admitted in a previous post, my memory isn't what it used to be! So each year I snap photos of all my decorations so I can refer to them when setting up my holiday displays the following year. I have found this to be very helpful for me, although I always change it up a bit (as I usually have multiple new items to include thanks to the after Christmas clearance sales!).  That being said,  I like being able to see the layout from the previous year and use that as a starting point.

Trimming the Christmas tree is a family event, and everyone must  be present! Holiday tunes play softly in the background, cookies and snacks are served, and the little ones always receive an annual Holiday stuffed animal to top off a very special day! I especially love the conversations that are elicited when one of our special personalized ornaments is unwrapped and ready for hanging on the tree. Thank goodness someone had the bright idea to add names, dates, important events to so many of our treasured ornaments! We have ornaments commemorating our first date, wedding, first home, new home, children, and other beloved family members and friends. Having the names and dates permanently affixed on the ornaments serve as sort of a "cheat sheet," if you will, when the kiddos ask "when did...?"

Grandparents Are Special

While I truly believe the best job in the world is being a mom, I must confess being a Grandparent must truly be awesome! I can't really imagine how anything could be better than being called Mommy, but I think being called "Grandma" or "Nana" or "Mimi" would be pretty special too! All the joy (and sometimes tears) watching the little ones grow up.. the excitement of each milestone from birth, kindergarten, grade and high school graduations, college, weddings, and new babies and then one day we magically become the Grandparent. When I look at my own Grandparents I am so grateful for their love and the knowledge and guidance they have imparted on myself, my siblings, and my cousins. I hope to someday have the same impact on my own grandchildren. There was great comfort in always knowing someone special would be there for me when my parents weren't able to be there due to work schedules, or illness, or whatever the circumstance may have been at the time. I have always known my Grandparents loved me as deeply as my own parents. So whenever I finally do become Grandma, I hope my children will rely on me to fill in the gaps when needed. So when mommy and daddy can't get away from work, please call on me to pick up the kiddos from day care, or school, or even scouts or ball practice. And when the little ones are wanting a special gift for birthday or the holidays and you can't seem to find it, let me know and I'll find it for you. And when the children are sick, please ask me to care for them while you are working or even just running your errands. I want to be the Grandparents who are at the grandkids' school play hours in advance just to get the best seat in the house!

National Grandparents Day began in the United States in 1978, and this year it will be celebrated on Sunday, September 13th.Three of my Grandparents had already passed, and  even though back then we didn't have an official day to celebrate Grandparents, I hope they always felt mine and my siblings' love and appreciation. My Grandparents' homes were filled with happiness and laughter, and there are so many special memories I have that will always be a part of me. Be sure to let your Grandparents know this year the special place they hold in your heart. Zoey's Attic can help with a personalized and totally unique Grandparent's Day gift designed just for your very own dear Grandma and Grandpa.

Christmas In July

So it's a week after the Fourth of July celebration and I should start thinking about a back to school list, but honestly I can't help myself from thinking about the Holidays! And I'm not referring to Halloween or even Thanksgiving, but rather "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas!" There's no hiding my excitement, Christmastime is my favorite season! Although our family fully participates in the true "reason for the season" we also greatly enjoy the giving (and of course the receiving!) that accompanies the Christmas festivities. It is such pure joy to witness the excitement in the faces and actions of the children and adults alike as they open their Christmas presents. Observing throughout the year the likes and dislikes of your children, family, and friends certainly helps with making decisions about what gifts each would like for the holidays. A unique personalized item is always a good bet, and definitely a welcomed and much appreciated gift.

Last year I surprised my Godson with the funny parody shirt "The Grandfather." The wording was easily customized to say "The Godson," and this was the perfect gift since he is my first Godchild. And, it was an especially fun present since "The Godfather" is his all-time favorite film series.

It's Almost Spring!

The March Equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth' s equator that runs from south to north. This year it will occur on March 20th and marks the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The 2014/2015 winter wasn't nearly as awful in our Midwest location as the previous winter season, but I am still ever thankful it's almost over (even if we did have sleet today!). I'm so looking forward to packing away my many layers of winter shirts, sweaters, jackets, and coats. I love sorting through my Spring clothing and filling my drawers and closet with light colored and lightweight Spring apparel. Dictionary.com defines the word "monogram" when used as a noun as "a design consisting of two or more alphabetic letters combined or interlaced, commonly one's initials, often printed on stationery, embroidered on clothing, etc." Monograms in times past had been very popular and were often considered a symbol of social status. They have been around since about 350 B.C. when initial monograms were etched in gold coins and used by the Romans and Greeks as royal signatures. It was during the 19th century Victorian Era that socially prominent higher class individuals adapted the monogram for personal use. When I was a teen, any item showcasing your personal monogram was very popular! As a matter of fact, when I graduated from high school my most prized gift was a set of beautiful cut out gold monogrammed earrings with matching necklace. During my high school and college years I also had several additional monogrammed items including a brown leather belt with gold plated monogrammed buckle and matching brown leather handbag with antique gold monogram clasp. Actually, monogrammed anything was all the fad in those days! In the subsequent years, the styles changed to a more causal wear and I sadly moved my treasured monogrammed apparel and accessories to the back of my closet. Today, the monogram once again holds a notable place in the world of fashion. Currently, a resurgence of the monogram was seen on the runways during the Fall 2014 Fashion Week. "W Magazine", a monthly American fashion magazine published by CondeNast Publications says "everything just seems better with a monogram on it."

When I was a young school girl and in the primary grades, our room mothers hosted holiday parties to celebrate Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. And if our St. Louis Cardinals Baseball team made it to the playoffs or World Series we had game watch parties at school to cheer on our hometown baseball club. The school I attended required the students to wear uniforms. Mine was a green and black plaid jumper with a white pointed collared shirt, either short or long sleeve. The boys wore black belted navy blue pants and also a white pointed collared shirt. The uniform shirt was made of 100% cotton which required ironing before it could be worn in public. So Sunday evenings were set aside for ironing all the shirts that would be needed for the family for the entire week ahead. My mom (and me too!) were so thankful when the cotton blend permanent press shirts made the scene in the local department stores. So luckily for me now that I'm all grown up I rarely have to iron anything! I do, of course, own an ironing board and deluxe steam iron, but they sure get a lot less use than the ones we had when I was a little girl!
On our holiday party days at school we were given an out-of-uniform day. This meant we could wear a special outfit of our choosing.
