School's Out, Almost!

When I was in school students were never recognized for completing any grade other than on your High School graduation day.You were expected to "graduate" at the end of each school year and as a result of your efforts recommended for promotion to the next grade level the following year. So that meant no special shirts acknowledging the last day of a particular grade and no congratulatory presents for advancing to a new grade level, only a "good job" after Mom and Dad reviewed the final report card and shared constructive criticism of what could have or should have been better. We wore our school uniform everyday of the school year. After an exhausting nine months of daily classwork as well as homework, it was finally the end of the school year and time for our student parade, school picnic, and summer vacation! Looking back, I suppose the new picnic outfit was the "gift" we each received for "graduating" that year. We did, however, always give our teachers a special gift at Christmas and the end of each school year.  When I was in grade school we had 54 kids in our second grade class with one teacher and not a single teacher's aide to assist. Mrs. Krause most definitely earned each and every thank you gift!

Times have changed and our precious little one's are recognized for everything! Just participate and you get a ribbon! It was definitely a different lifestyle when I was young. We didn't have preschools and kindergarten was merely a half day and you were assigned to a morning or afternoon session. We walked to and from class with several of our 5 and 6 year old classmates. There was no parental supervision and somehow we all survived! The moms for the most part were stay at home moms tending to the smaller siblings and household chores, and the father's wages were the only source of family income. Monies for shirts and gifts, other than for Christmas and birthdays, just wasn't available. No regrets though. I am ever thankful for all the love and shared family experiences of my childhood. Life today is not as simple as it seemed back then, and yes, I do give special recognition to acknowledge the kiddos' achievements. Everyone does nowadays, it's the norm and I wouldn't have it any other way! It's Almost Spring!

The March Equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth' s equator that runs from south to north. This year it will occur on March 20th and marks the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The 2014/2015 winter wasn't nearly as awful in our Midwest location as the previous winter season, but I am still ever thankful it's almost over (even if we did have sleet today!). I'm so looking forward to packing away my many layers of winter shirts, sweaters, jackets, and coats. I love sorting through my Spring clothing and filling my drawers and closet with light colored and lightweight Spring apparel. St. Patrick and His Day

Who is this St. Patrick guy and why all the fuss with his day? St. Patrick was a Christian missionary and is known as the Patron Saint of Ireland.  He was originally from Scotland, born in 367 A.D.  When Patrick was sixteen years old he was captured and enslaved by Irish pirates. After six years Patrick was able to escape his captors and eventually made his way back to his family. He then studied for the priesthood and later returned to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick established many churches throughout Ireland and is also credited with several miracles. For example, legend has it that Patrick is responsible for driving the snakes out of Ireland. He has even been credited with resurrecting men from the dead. In addition, St. Patrick is believed to have taught the Irish about the Holy Trinity by using a three leaf shamrock. The leaves of the shamrock represented the Christian teaching of three persons in one God. Interestingly, Patrick has never been formally canonized a Saint by a Pope of the Catholic church. During the first millennium of the Catholic Church, there was no formal canonization process. However, Patrick's name is found in the list of Saints. March 17th commemorates the date of St. Patrick's death. The day is not only a religious holy day, but also celebrated as a cultural holiday by people all around the world. On March 17th the world goes green from Dublin to Tokyo! It goes without saying that just about everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

Everything Is Better With A Monogram

Dictionary.com defines the word "monogram" when used as a noun as "a design consisting of two or more alphabetic letters combined or interlaced, commonly one's initials, often printed on stationery, embroidered on clothing, etc." Monograms in times past had been very popular and were often considered a symbol of social status. They have been around since about 350 B.C. when initial monograms were etched in gold coins and used by the Romans and Greeks as royal signatures. It was during the 19th century Victorian Era that socially prominent higher class individuals adapted the monogram for personal use. When I was a teen, any item showcasing your personal monogram was very popular! As a matter of fact, when I graduated from high school my most prized gift was a set of beautiful cut out gold monogrammed earrings with matching necklace. During my high school and college years I also had several additional monogrammed items including a brown leather belt with gold plated monogrammed buckle and matching brown leather handbag with antique gold monogram clasp. Actually, monogrammed anything was all the fad in those days! In the subsequent years, the styles changed to a more causal wear and I sadly moved my treasured monogrammed apparel and accessories to the back of my closet. Today, the monogram once again holds a notable place in the world of fashion. Currently, a resurgence of the monogram was seen on the runways during the Fall 2014 Fashion Week. "W Magazine", a monthly American fashion magazine published by CondeNast Publications says "everything just seems better with a monogram on it."

I've almost completed my Christmas shopping and it's time to start the wrapping! My list is always way too ambitious, and my husband says I buy for anyone and everyone I've ever met! It sure feels like it when I sit down to wrap! I have a crazy little method that works well for me. I use a different patterned paper for each of the kids, my husband, and for the individual families and friends we purchase gifts for at Christmas. So, for example, my brother's family may have a green paper with Santas and the presents for my best friend's family might then be wrapped in a red paper decorated with snowmen. I can then just look at a package and know who's family is to receive that particular gift. The wrapping begins after a long day and the kiddos are fast asleep all snuggled in their beds. I gather all my supplies in advance including several different papering options, ribbons in various holiday colors, scissors, several rolls of tape, name tags, and a red pen. This helps me to stay organized and focused on the duties at hand because I'm usually pretty worn out by this time of the night! I always wrap the presents at the dining room table with a hint of traditional Christmas movie playing softly in the background. I'm typically still at the paper wrapping station into the wee hours of the morning, and I never complete the task in one session so I can always plan on a few more very long nights finishing the job. At the end of the wrap I hide the packages in empty suitcases and boxes placed in the back of the basement... you know, where all the monsters hang out! Thus, no worries the little ones will be snooping around to see if Santa has already dropped off some presents for them!

Recently I saw a video on how to quickly and very easily wrap all those holiday packages. The video was from 93.7 FM and shared on Mama's Baby Cupcakes' Facebook page. I watched the video and was excited to try this new way to wrap my presents. Well, I tried it and wasn't very successful so I watched the tutorial again, and then yet again! I really don't know what my problem was but I sure couldn't wrap any present as fast and efficiently as they did on the video! I felt very inadequate at gift wrapping (sort of like how I feel when I try to dance!). Anyway, I wasn't expecting to fail GIFTWRAPPING101! I got so frustrated I went back to my own tried and true system of wrapping!
