Personalized Graduation Tees & Gifts!

When I was a young school girl there was no internet. I had absolutely no knowledge of computers and certainly had no idea of how this advancement in technology would impact everyday life in the future! It's really difficult for me to imagine my life now without being "connected" via the internet! Our kiddos surely live in a vastly different world than I did when I was a youngster. We actually shopped in a real brick and mortar store as there was no online shopping in those days! Our parents took us to the local discount store, either Spartans (long since closed) or K-Mart for our play clothes. Famous Barr, which is now a Macy's, and Stix, Baer and Fuller (currently a Dillard's) were the nearby department stores. We only shopped at these stores for special occasions! This is where we went to purchase our outfits for family weddings, Christmas, or Easter. Then of course every August we went into the city to visit Wilhelms, a specialty shop which carried our school uniforms. We did have a few out-of-uniform days during the school year and if you wanted to wear personalized clothing you had to have your mom or grandma make them for you. I was certainly very fortunate that my Aunt Mary Jane was an excellent seamstress. She could make anything! When I graduated from the 8th grade she made me two beautiful A-line dresses. One was a sleeveless blue paisley patterned dress to wear to summer events, the other a short sleeved tan corduroy dress with an orange and rust flowered pattern to wear to the upcoming Fall dances. I couldn't have been any happier with this special gift my Aunt made just for me!

So in the "olden days" we didn't have anything personalized with our name unless mom made it, and that meant a trip to the local fabric shop to purchase iron-on patches. After carefully placing the selected decals and letters of our name on the shirt Mom would affix them with a very hot iron. Unfortunately, the personalization would peel off the shirt after its first washing. Embroidery was another method of personalizing our clothing, but you had to know someone who could embroider! Back then it was done by hand and not by a machine.

Oh, and there were no preschools when I was a little girl so there was never a need for a preschool graduation outfit. However, the last day of kindergarten (1/2 day only) was dress up day! Teachers Are Awesome!

We interact with many teachers during our lifetime including our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. From the beginning, these treasured family members have been there to guide us along life's glorious and sometimes twisted and complicated paths. When the time comes for formal education, some parents may choose home schooling. Many others will make the decision to send their little ones to a traditional preschool and then off to grade school and high school, either public or private. As an adult you will partner with many teachers who will help you educate your child with the information and skills needed to ensure success, not only in present day activities but also in the future as a contributing member of society.

I owe everything to my teachers! Without a doubt my instructors have proven to be exemplary role models and have not only taught the essential reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also instilled the integrity and values required for a productive and satisfying existence. I am incredibly grateful to all the men and women whom have taught me with patience and kindness so many invaluable lessons. Thank you to my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Hamm, for your hugs and consoling words when I cried because I made my leaf man upside down. A grateful heart to Sister Perpetua for demanding I learn my multiplication tables with rapid fire. Special thanks to Sister John Kevin for letting me realize it is OK to be "me" especially during those awkward teen years. Many thanks, also, to Mr. Mullen for teaching me that there is good in everyone you encounter, even if you sometimes have to search for it. I could go on and on, but you get the point.... my awesome teachers over the years have in countless ways had a positive impact on my life, and I am so thankful for all they have done to help mold me into the person I am today!

School's Out, Almost!

When I was in school students were never recognized for completing any grade other than on your High School graduation day.You were expected to "graduate" at the end of each school year and as a result of your efforts recommended for promotion to the next grade level the following year. So that meant no special shirts acknowledging the last day of a particular grade and no congratulatory presents for advancing to a new grade level, only a "good job" after Mom and Dad reviewed the final report card and shared constructive criticism of what could have or should have been better. We wore our school uniform everyday of the school year. After an exhausting nine months of daily classwork as well as homework, it was finally the end of the school year and time for our student parade, school picnic, and summer vacation! Looking back, I suppose the new picnic outfit was the "gift" we each received for "graduating" that year. We did, however, always give our teachers a special gift at Christmas and the end of each school year.  When I was in grade school we had 54 kids in our second grade class with one teacher and not a single teacher's aide to assist. Mrs. Krause most definitely earned each and every thank you gift!

Times have changed and our precious little one's are recognized for everything! Just participate and you get a ribbon! It was definitely a different lifestyle when I was young. We didn't have preschools and kindergarten was merely a half day and you were assigned to a morning or afternoon session. We walked to and from class with several of our 5 and 6 year old classmates. There was no parental supervision and somehow we all survived! The moms for the most part were stay at home moms tending to the smaller siblings and household chores, and the father's wages were the only source of family income. Monies for shirts and gifts, other than for Christmas and birthdays, just wasn't available. No regrets though. I am ever thankful for all the love and shared family experiences of my childhood. Life today is not as simple as it seemed back then, and yes, I do give special recognition to acknowledge the kiddos' achievements. Everyone does nowadays, it's the norm and I wouldn't have it any other way! Oh No! It's Back To School!

Geez... the first day of school comes earlier and earlier every year! When I was a kid we never went back to school until the beginning of September. The academic year ended the first week of June and began the day after Labor Day. I remember those Labor Day evenings when it was the tradition to scrub off the summer dirt. We had a full three months off for summer vacation, so by this time we were definitely ready to head back to the classroom (I'm sure my parents were ready too!).  I believe the difference in our schedule was that we never had a Fall or Spring break, but rather only two weeks off during the Christmas holidays. I liked it this way...work, work, work, then play, play, play! I guess too it really needed to be this way since we didn't have air conditioning in the schools (nor at home) back then. It would have been unbearable attending class in the oppressive summer heat in St. Louis.  Now days the schools in our area are air conditioned and the first day of school is earlier and earlier each year. Most of the neighboring school districts have a start date some time during the first two weeks of August. The school year is about over, I guess! Since we had so many snow days this past winter the local school districts had to extend the school year by several days so I'm not really sure when the last day is for everyone in our area. Well, the extra days work for me allowing extra time to figure out my teacher appreciation gifts. I'm also thinking about some end of school year/graduation shirts for the little ones. In my experience, my kiddos and their friends love wearing their very own personalized tees.  The shirts for preschoolers and kindergarten graduates are so cute!  I love the design featuring the little boy or girl graduate and especially love that you can customize the skin tone and hair color. There is also a more generic design with a grad cap and diploma which can also be personalized with your little graduate's name. I think the adorable end of year hoot owl shirt is so funny too and perfect for any young school aged child! Now, it's a little more difficult deciding on a teacher appreciation gift since I don't really interact on a regular basis with the teachers to know their personal likes and dislikes.  For me, I really love the tote bags since I always have way too many things to lug around! So I think my kids' teachers might very well like a personalized tote with possibly a matching acrylic tumbler or water bottle as a special thank you for a great year.
