Geez... the first day of school comes earlier and earlier every year! When I was a kid we never went back to school until the beginning of September. The academic year ended the first week of June and began the day after Labor Day. I remember those Labor Day evenings when it was the tradition to scrub off the summer dirt. We had a full three months off for summer vacation, so by this time we were definitely ready to head back to the classroom (I'm sure my parents were ready too!).  I believe the difference in our schedule was that we never had a Fall or Spring break, but rather only two weeks off during the Christmas holidays. I liked it this way...work, work, work, then play, play, play! I guess too it really needed to be this way since we didn't have air conditioning in the schools (nor at home) back then. It would have been unbearable attending class in the oppressive summer heat in St. Louis.  Now days the schools in our area are air conditioned and the first day of school is earlier and earlier each year. Most of the neighboring school districts have a start date some time during the first two weeks of August. I attended a private school when I was younger and we always wore a uniform... green plaid jumper with white collared blouse in elementary school, and a gray and gold skirt, white collared blouse, and gray blazer with school emblem during my high school years. My neighborhood friends attended the local public school. They didn't have to wear a uniform, and I was so jealous of them! My big shopping adventure during those years was not for new school clothes, but rather, it was for a special matching short and top set for our annual school picnic at the close of each school year. In those days we didn't return to school from summer vacation until after the Labor Day holiday in early September. So my "street" friends shopped at a nearby mall or local discount store like a K-Mart in early August for "back to school" clothes. Back then (in the olden days as the kiddos refer to them... makes you feel really ancient!) we never had an inkling that one day our "back to school" shopping would be done online! Gee, we didn't even know what the internet was nor did anyone even own a computer! My how times have changed! True Confessions....

True confession here... the Fourth of July isn't my favorite holiday.  As a kid, it meant summer vacation was on the downward slide and I didn't like that scenario at all!  And another true confession... I'm afraid of fireworks! Pyrotechnics really scare me and I'm sorry to have passed this fear on to my daughter as well. I don't like the loud booming noises and I certainly have never enjoyed sparklers. Sadly, someone gets a sparkler burn every year at our family get together. However, I do like watching our community's spectacular firework extravaganza. It is always very professionally done and very pretty with lots of oohs and aahs!  Also, in addition to my independence and great pride in this awesome country I call home, I love the gathering of family and friends for the annual Independence Day barbeque. How exciting would it be to announce to all your loved ones that a precious new baby will be at the celebration next year?  Even better, let one of the kiddos wear an "explosive secret" tee and sit back and enjoy all the fun watching everyone figure out what the shirt says!  Zoey's Attic has super cute personalized tees for this very special day!

June Is For Dads!

Well, today is the unofficial beginning of summer!  It's also Memorial Day, a U.S. federal holiday to pay respect to America's servicemen and women whom died while preserving our freedoms. While families are gathering for the annual kick-off to summer barbeque, I truly hope everyone sets aside a few moments to remember and also to educate our children on the importance of this special day. So as the saying goes "Freedom is not free".... everyone from Zoey's Attic sends our thanks to all past and present service members and their families for defending our personal freedoms. The Hunt!



My First Easter Onesie

In less than three weeks it will be Easter. I'm so excited for the
traditional family egg hunt that always takes place following church services on Easter Sunday. It seems to rain every other Easter, so this year it should be a sunny day! The Easter Egg Hunt is so much fun whether it takes place in the yard or in the house due to inclement weather conditions. And, I love to mix the beautifully decorated 'real' hard boiled eggs with plastic artificial eggs filled with Easter treats for the kiddos and (and old!) alike! The day is topped off with a delicious family meal. Most families I know serve ham, but not this family. No matter what the weather is on Easter, we always have a family barbeque! It's not only Easter Sunday, but also the start of the Spring barbeque season for us.  Ribs, chicken, and hamburgers are on the menu along with Grandma's potato salad (best ever!) and corn on the cob. One of my very favorite Fall activities is the annual visit to Pumpkinland at a farm nearby. I love watching all the kids (big and little, young and old) having so much fun flying through the air on the zipline, chasing one another through the corn maze, and petting all the animals in the petting zoo. They usually have goats, cows, chickens, and horses. The kiddos can also feed the goats! After climbing the bales of hay we finally take the wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch. Once there, we all hop off and pick the perfect pumpkin to make the perfect Jack-O-Lantern! There are so many fun photo opps during a visit to the pumpkin patch, so why not wear a customized tee for an awesome touch to the family picture?

Memorial Day is May 28th. It is a day set aside to pay tribute to our military veterans, specifically the brave men and women who have died in the service of our nation. Many programs are planned each year across the United States to honor these courageous soldiers. In honor of my father, a World War II veteran, I have personally attended many such events in the past. I have always brought along my daughter to these memorial events as I believe it is so important to teach our younger generations about the sacrifices of our loyal men and women soldiers. I hope many of you will also make time on such an important day to remember those who have given the ultimate for our country.
