Grandparents Are Special

While I truly believe the best job in the world is being a mom, I must confess being a Grandparent must truly be awesome! I can't really imagine how anything could be better than being called Mommy, but I think being called "Grandma" or "Nana" or "Mimi" would be pretty special too! All the joy (and sometimes tears) watching the little ones grow up.. the excitement of each milestone from birth, kindergarten, grade and high school graduations, college, weddings, and new babies and then one day we magically become the Grandparent. When I look at my own Grandparents I am so grateful for their love and the knowledge and guidance they have imparted on myself, my siblings, and my cousins. I hope to someday have the same impact on my own grandchildren. There was great comfort in always knowing someone special would be there for me when my parents weren't able to be there due to work schedules, or illness, or whatever the circumstance may have been at the time. I have always known my Grandparents loved me as deeply as my own parents. So whenever I finally do become Grandma, I hope my children will rely on me to fill in the gaps when needed. So when mommy and daddy can't get away from work, please call on me to pick up the kiddos from day care, or school, or even scouts or ball practice. And when the little ones are wanting a special gift for birthday or the holidays and you can't seem to find it, let me know and I'll find it for you. And when the children are sick, please ask me to care for them while you are working or even just running your errands. I want to be the Grandparents who are at the grandkids' school play hours in advance just to get the best seat in the house!

Remembering Your Grandparents

 

My grandmother moved into her house in 1929,  and I have the most amazing memories of family times spent with her in this home. My Grandmother (everyone called her "Goggie") cared for all her grandchildren whenever asked whether it was watching over us when a new sibling arrived or squeezing fresh orange juice for us when we were sick and Mom had to work.  We celebrated birthdays and holidays year after year in her home on Hanley Rd. Now it has sadly been many, many years since Goggie's passing and the house was sold. My siblings and cousins often reminisce of those days so long ago and have always said how much we'd love to once again step into the home that was the site of so many joyous occasions.  Good news...our wish came true! Unbeknownst to any of us until recently, my niece is actually friends with the young man who currently lives in my Grandmother's home!  Although my niece has been in this home many times, she had absolutely no idea this was the house her own Grandmother and Great-Grandmother had lived in many years ago.  Her friend graciously invited us to visit and what an awesome visit it was!  The rooms were every bit as spacious as I had remembered.  It was almost surreal to step into the closet with the window as this was always a favorite spot for the girls to gather.  It contained a shelf full of Barbie dolls and trunks full of dress up clothes.  The light fixtures in the entry and also in the breakfast nook were the original ones that I remember as a child.  I had forgotten about the glass crystal door knobs on all the closet doors.  And here they were, and it made me think about how many of my relatives had actually turned these knobs in the years past. My Grandmother's home was a home filled with love and laughter, and these special memories I have will always be a part of me.  National Grandparents Day began in the United States in 1978, the year my Goggie passed away.  Even though we didn't have an official day to celebrate Grandparents back then, I hope she always felt our love and appreciation. Thanksgiving is observed in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November each year. This year's celebration will take place on November 22nd. I have always loved Thanksgiving since I was a small child. Preparations began on Thanksgiving Eve when I would help my mom make her special stuffing for the turkey. My job was to toast the four loaves of bread needed to make the dressing. The toasted bread would then be torn into small cubes and simmered in herbs and spices. Onions, celery, and sausage would be added to make the best turkey dressing ever! The mouthwatering smell would permeate the house all night long and into the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day. What could possibly be better than watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade while snuggled on the couch in my pj's and savoring the smell of the turkey roasting in the oven? Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins would begin to arrive in the late afternoon for a large family gathering and shared meal. Oh such special memories of times past! Everyone would dress in adorable Thanksgiving attire and heartwarming family stories would be told... some old, some new. Some Thanksgiving Day celebrations even included the joyous news that a new little turkey would be joining the family! Thankful For Grandparents!

Did you know that Grandparents Day will be celebrated in the U.S. on Sunday, September 9th?  It was proclaimed a national holiday in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. The idea was conceived in 1970 by a West Virginia housewife, Marian McQuade. Through her efforts statewide, the United States Congress passed legislation to proclaim the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. September was chosen as the month to celebrate our beloved Grandparents because it is a month representative of the "autumn years" of life. A special day to recognize Grandparents is also set aside in several other countries throughout the world. For example, it is celebrated each year in Canada on the second Sunday of September. In Australia, Queensland was the first state to officially celebrate Grandparents Day on the first Sunday in November 2010. Several European nations also set aside a special day to honor Grandparents. France celebates the first Sunday of March, Italy on October 2nd, and the U.K. recognizes Grandparents on the first Sunday of October. National Grandparent's Day - September 9th

I've always loved Grandparent's day. I think it's such a great idea - of course we have mother's and father's day, but grandparent's day is a great way to pay tribute to our grandmas, grandpas, nanas, papas, or whatever name you call those special people who looked after you, played with you, baked brownies or tossed footballs - your grandparents!

Grandparent's day is always the Sunday after Labor Day. So, this year, Grandparent's day falls on September 9th, 2007.

This year grandparent's day has double meaning for me as it is not only a day in which I can celebrate my grandparents, but now my parent's are grandparents and I can use this day as a way to reflect on how much they've helped me out this past year as I got used to becoming a parent myself. I can give them a present (from babygirl of course) and show them just how much I appreciate the babysitting hours, food preparation and just general support they've given me and the babygirl over their first year as grandparents.

National Grandparent's Day Website - This gives a little background information on why the day was created. Actually, it wasn't until the mid-70's when a housewife named Marian McQuade decided to push for the creation of grandparent's day. Her main purpose was to help lonely elderly in nursing homes and help young children to gain a better appreciation for the wisdom and heritage provided by their grandparents.
