Santa Claus is coming to town! This classic holiday song has been a favorite of mine (and so many other children and adults alike) from the very first time I heard my mom sing it to me. It has remained a best-loved song as I have shared it countless times with my own children and so many nieces, nephews and friends. The original song was written in 1934 by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie, and it was an immediate hit!  Over the years it has been recorded by various artists including Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra in 1935 and in more recent years by Bruce Springsteen and of course, the ever popular version by Ms. Mariah Carey.  During the holidays (and depending on the situation it may not have even been the holidays!), my mom would remind my siblings and me that "He's making a list, Checking it twice, Gonna find out who's naughty or nice." Well this little reminder was definitely a catalyst to be extra nice so I wouldn't find any coal in my stocking on Christmas morning! Holiday Memories

For several years now my sister-in-law and I have taken our girls Christmas shopping in Chicago. The decorations are fabulous and one of our favorite things to do is to see the holiday window displays and eat at the famous Walnut Room in the old Marshall Field's department store on State Street in the Loop. Marshall Field's was bought by Macy's a few years past and thankfully they have continued this marvelous holiday tradition. The centerpiece of the Walnut Room is the beautifully decorated 45 foot tall Christmas tree. It is adorned with so many magnificent ornaments and is just the most beautiful site!  Holiday cheer radiates throughout the Walnut Room!  I also love to decorate my Christmas tree with special ornaments which remind me of a treasured moment in my life... a wedding, the birth of a child, a new home, school days..and on and on! Thanksgiving Sibling Sets

What comes to mind when you hear the word "turkey"?  Well, for starters it's a large bird related to the chicken, but to millions of people in the United States it immediately brings thoughts of the Thanksgiving feast.  Of course, Turkey is also a country in Western Asia / Southeastern Europe.  There are several other connotations of note as well.  The term "turkey" can refer to a foolish person and it also can define a failure as in a theatrical play or movie.  It even has a meaning in the world of sports.  For example, when a bowler has three consecutive strikes it is known as a "turkey."  Then we have "cold turkey" which refers to an immediate and complete withdrawal from an addiction such as cigarette smoking, alcohol, or even drugs.  For me, I prefer to think about the delicious roasted turkey we serve each and every year on Thanksgiving Day!  I'm so happy the Native American Wampanoag tribe introduced the turkey to the early Pilgrim settlers!  So whatever your connection may be with "turkey" Zoey's Attic has colorful and fun turkey designs making for the perfect Thanksgiving shirts for everyone in the family.

Triathlon Cheerleader T-Shirt

Yesterday was the St. Louis Rock 'N Roll Marathon.  About 13,000 runners participated and thousands of fans including newborns and the elderly lined the streets to root for their runners.  A few weeks past I was in Chicago and cheered on the runners in the annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  There were runners from all 50 states and over 100 countries. I was one of the approximately 1.5 million spectators.  A moment of silence was held before the race began to memorialize and honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.  Many of the runners and their cheerleaders wore shirts, shoes, bracelets, or carried banners in support of Boston.  In response to the tragedy in Boston, security has been ramped up at similar events throughout our country. Although the presence of uniformed police, undercover agents, and Homeland security was very evident in Chicago it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the ginormous crowd.  Security was also tight in St. Louis this weekend.  In addition to the Rock 'N Roll Marathon, the St. Louis Cardinals are also hosting games 3, 4 and 5 of baseball's World Series and our opponents are the Boston Red Sox.  So if you plan to attend one of the upcoming marathons or triathlons it is always fun to bring along your fans. The runners are energized by the encouragement of the crowd and how fun would it be to have the little ones wearing personalized tees to cheer on mommy and/or daddy?  Zoey's Attic can customize any shirt with your team name and colors, wording, or just about anything you need!

It's the last day of September and it seems all the stars have aligned perfectly! That is, if you're a sports fan! I love this time of year when so many of my favorite sporting events overlap. We have the St. Louis Cardinals finishing in first place in the National League Central Division and heading to the NL Division Series later this week. Our hockey team, the St. Louis Blues, has completed pre-season play and the opening game here at home is also this week. Then, of course, we are home to the St. Louis Rams football team. Well, let's just say I like football a lot and follow the home team, but the Rams play so far this year is making it a bit difficult to be an avid fan. My mom always told me that the older I got the faster time would pass by.  So that explains it!  Where has September gone?  My goodness we're already into the third week and it just seems like Labor Day (September 2nd!) was yesterday. At any rate, I need to set my sights on Halloween as it will surely creep up on me quite quickly.  Halloween has always been one of my very favorite holidays.  Most likely because I'm a candyholic (not just a chocoholic, but a candyholic!). Yes, I love ALL candy.. always have and I suppose always will! Thus the creation of these adorable candy bags for all the Halloween "loot."  When I was a kid we used a brown paper grocery bag for our treat bag (didn't have plastic grocery bags where we shopped!). Remembering Your Grandparents

 

My grandmother moved into her house in 1929,  and I have the most amazing memories of family times spent with her in this home. My Grandmother (everyone called her "Goggie") cared for all her grandchildren whenever asked whether it was watching over us when a new sibling arrived or squeezing fresh orange juice for us when we were sick and Mom had to work.  We celebrated birthdays and holidays year after year in her home on Hanley Rd. Now it has sadly been many, many years since Goggie's passing and the house was sold. My siblings and cousins often reminisce of those days so long ago and have always said how much we'd love to once again step into the home that was the site of so many joyous occasions.  Good news...our wish came true! Unbeknownst to any of us until recently, my niece is actually friends with the young man who currently lives in my Grandmother's home!  Although my niece has been in this home many times, she had absolutely no idea this was the house her own Grandmother and Great-Grandmother had lived in many years ago.  Her friend graciously invited us to visit and what an awesome visit it was!  The rooms were every bit as spacious as I had remembered.  It was almost surreal to step into the closet with the window as this was always a favorite spot for the girls to gather.  It contained a shelf full of Barbie dolls and trunks full of dress up clothes.  The light fixtures in the entry and also in the breakfast nook were the original ones that I remember as a child.  I had forgotten about the glass crystal door knobs on all the closet doors.  And here they were, and it made me think about how many of my relatives had actually turned these knobs in the years past. My Grandmother's home was a home filled with love and laughter, and these special memories I have will always be a part of me.  National Grandparents Day began in the United States in 1978, the year my Goggie passed away.  Even though we didn't have an official day to celebrate Grandparents back then, I hope she always felt our love and appreciation. Almost Fall!

The variety of colors and aromatic scents of the garden are some of life's most awesome gifts!  Gardening is a source of comfort, therapy if you will, for many people.  Personally, for me, it can be a major source of frustration as I definitely do not have a very "green" thumb.  I prefer to visit the magnificent Missouri Botanical Garden located here in St. Louis.  It is a National Historic Landmark and our nation's oldest botanical garden in continuous operation. Locals know the garden as Shaw's Garden. The land was owned by Henry Shaw, and his estate home from 1850 remains on the garden property and is open for tours. A recent brunch and casual walk through the Garden was exhilarating!  The English Woodlands were lovely and so peaceful. A stop at the pond in the beautifully understated Japanese Gardens to feed the carp is always a must.  Just watching the excitement of the children feeding these large and very colorful fish is a special treat! Then continuing along the path you eventually arrive at the experimental flower and vegetables gardens.  Staff is always present to offer helpful ideas and suggestions for the novice as well as the experienced gardener.  I was surprised to see so many pumpkins already popping out from beneath their large leaves... a sign Fall is not far away. It got me thinking about the months ahead and all the upcomimg fun activities like apple picking and the annual visit to the pumpkin patch. Autumn is perfect too for gathering family and friends for a hayride and roasting marshmallows around a bonfire. You'll want to check out Zoey's Attic for the perfect shirt for all your Fall activities.

Back To School Fun!

I attended a private school when I was younger and we always wore a uniform... green plaid jumper with white collared blouse in elementary school, and a gray and gold skirt, white collared blouse, and gray blazer with school emblem during my high school years. My neighborhood friends attended the local public school. They didn't have to wear a uniform, and I was so jealous of them! My big shopping adventure during those years was not for new school clothes, but rather, it was for a special matching short and top set for our annual school picnic at the close of each school year. In those days we didn't return to school from summer vacation until after the Labor Day holiday in early September. So my "street" friends shopped at a nearby mall or local discount store like a K-Mart in early August for "back to school" clothes. Back then (in the olden days as the kiddos refer to them... makes you feel really ancient!) we never had an inkling that one day our "back to school" shopping would be done online! Gee, we didn't even know what the internet was nor did anyone even own a computer! My how times have changed! True confession here... the Fourth of July isn't my favorite holiday.  As a kid, it meant summer vacation was on the downward slide and I didn't like that scenario at all!  And another true confession... Oh so many years ago, when I was a kiddo myself, my family spent many Spring and Summer weekends at our cousin's clubhouse on the Meramec River in Eureka, MO. The house had a large wrap around screened in porch and it was lined with one cot after another where all of the kid cousins slept. We, also, did not have indoor plumbing at the "country" home, and it was somewhat frightening using the outhouse during the darkness of the night. By day we would picnic on the sandbar, swim and float the river. In the evenings we would barbeque and then eat the homemade ice cream we had made earlier in the day. The clubhouse was bordered on three sides by farm land. The cornfields were especially fun for playing hide and seek as they provided many avenues for hiding! Soybeans and wheat were planted in the adjacent fields. Everyone loved riding on the combines and tractors when the fields were plowed or the crops were being harvested. I really miss the innocence of these childhood days and love to reflect on the many happy memories of days gone by spent at the clubhouse on the farm. April has flown by, and where did it go? Now I'm looking forward to May and the celebration of Moms! May is by far my favorite month of the year. As a kiddo, when May arrived, it was the month that finally brought warm weather, and we played outside until Mom called us home at dark. It was also the end of the school year and in just a few short weeks the much anticipated summer vacation would begin. We also celebrated several family birthdays during May, and I even chose a date in May for my wedding. My inner rockstar self has taken great delight in watching American Idol since Season One.  I must admit I was worried when Simon Cowell left the show, but was surprisingly very happy with the additions of Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez! These two stars renewed my interest in a show that had gotten a little stale for me.  I'm not so happy with the current Season 12. I have enjoyed the singers for the most part, but there has been a little too much country for me.  I really prefer the tempo of rock music (true confession..my all-time favorite Idol contestant is Bo Bice from Season 4). Anyway, the divas currently judging make it uncomfortable to watch, and Randy is just too predictable. I have, however, found a new appreciation for Keith Urban and his music.  He seems like a very nice fellow.  Another favorite show is The Voice. Well, my interest may actually be fueled by my crush on Adam Levine of Maroon 5. I'm not usually into guys with lots of tattoos, but he's a real cutie-patootie! I'm also an Usher fan so Season 4 has been lots of fun for me! Now we can look forward to the season finales of these two shows. So, there's plenty of time for all future rockstars to get the perfect rockstar tee for the big events! You can even announce a new rockstar will be joing the family with a rockstar big sister or big brother tee from Zoey's Attic. The American Idol Season 12 Finale is Thursday, May 16th, and The Voice Season 4 Finale is Tuesday, June 18th. Hope your favorite is a winner!

Surprise!

So you're expecting a new addition to the family and you're busy getting everything together in anticipation of the big event. Family and friends have been told the exciting news and a sweet Pecking Order Birdie sibling set for three has been ordered for biggest brother and big sister along with an adorable matching onesie for the new baby.  The shirts are delivered and everyone is happy.  Then a visit to the doctor and bingo... the family can now expect not one newborn... but two!  Now that's a surprise!  So mom, who has everything under control, makes plans for one more.  She even has the presence of mind to figure out she needs a new sibling set with four birdies.  Now this is an amazing mom who really has it all together!  Not so sure, in fact completely sure, I would not have thought a minute about the sibling set for the kiddos after hearing this shocking news!  So mom contacts Zoey's Attic to discuss another sibling set with the fabulous idea of using the shirts for a special announcement photo shoot.  Mom orders a set of two shirts and two newborn onesies.. a blue shirt and birdie for biggest brother, a pink shirt and birdie for big sister and two white onesies with yellow birdies for Baby #3 and Baby #4.  The photo shoot is a success. The shirts may be sweet, but the models are just so, so cute!  Family and friends now know twin girls will be joining this special family. Congratulations Dad, Mom, Biggest Brother, and Big Sister!
