Now Open In Webster Groves!

That's right! We are so pleased to announce that Zoey's Attic has officially opened its new brick-and-mortar retail location at 20 N Gore Avenue in Webster Groves, MO.  Store hours are 9:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday; 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday; and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. You can also connect with Zoey's Attic-Webster Groves on Facebook where updates on store hours, products, and special deals will be shared with all our friends.

Our Zoey's Attic online shop was officially launched in November 2006 by Erin Delanty, aka Zoey! The inspiration for the website came shortly after Erin and her husband, Tim, welcomed the birth of their first child, Bridget, in August of that year. In May 2008, Bridget became a big sister herself and the inspiration continues! After searching unsuccessfully online for unique newborn baby bodysuits and tees and listening to family and friends who were having difficulty finding those very special one-of-a-kind big brother / big sister shirts and matching sibling sets, Erin decided to use her background as a graphic designer and web developer to design her very own line of products. Erin's initial idea was to create a web-based shop where new parents and parents-to-be could involve all members of the family in sharing the oh so exciting "baby news" by offering a variety of pregnancy or baby announcements and hard to find big brother and big sister shirts and gifts. Zoey's Attic sold its first shirt just two days after launching the website and development has expanded based on the initial and continuing positive response of our greatly appreciated and much valued customers. Since opening, Zoey's Attic Personalized Gifts online shop has continued to grow and now offers many additional high quality products for the entire family including adorably designed and personalized pillows, tote bags, and drinkware. Here you will also find the sweetest ever embroidered personalized items for baby shower and newborn welcoming gifts. Additionally, Zoey's collection includes a wide variety of custom seasonal and holiday related products perfect for personal use and gift giving too!

Erin and her husband Tim have been lifelong residents of Webster Groves, MO and are so excited to bring their successful internet based business to Old Webster! If you happen to be from the area, Zoey's Attic is now occupying the space that was previously Apple of Your Eye, one of Erin's favorite childhood shops! Zoey's Attic won't be exactly the same, but the goal is to follow in the amazing footsteps of its previous owner by bringing you outstanding customer service, unique personalized gifts and a comfortable and fun shopping experience! If you are in the area, please be sure to visit with us! We'd love to see you! And, if you're not closeby you can always shop any time of day or night at our Zoey's Attic Personalized Gifts online shop. Many, many thanks also to all our customers, friends, and families for the awesome support you have given us throughout the years! You're the absolute best!

Fun Fall Holidays!

Halloween is this Saturday! The kiddos are so excited for the school parties which will take place this Friday. They will be super energized and bursting with excitement this year since Halloween happens to fall on the weekend. There will be countless questions all day on "what time is it?" and "is it time to put on our costumes?" and "when can we start trick or treating?" A pot of chili will be simmering on the stove all afternoon and everyone will have a bowlful before we set out on our evening trick or treat adventure. Traditionally, Halloween evening ends with a bonfire for family and friends. We have a weenie roast and even though our bags are overflowing with candies we still make s'mores. In my book, you just can't have a bonfire without s'mores! The good news this year is that Halloween is also the last day of daylight savings. It officially ends in our Central Time Zone at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1st. So that means we will set our clocks back one hour before we turn in for the night. Yes! That extra hour of sleep will definitely help when arousing the gang in the morning for Sunday church services!

Soon Halloween 2015 will just be a memory and we will move on to the Thanksgiving celebration. I love Thanksgiving! The evening before the holiday is busy, busy, busy! I like to set my holiday table and also prepare some of the dishes the night before so as to relieve some of the stress getting everything ready for the Thanksgiving meal. So by the time I turn in for the night on Wednesday the cheesy mashed potatoes, Swiss cheese vegetable medley, sweet potato casserole, and pumpkin and pecan pies have all been made and just need to be warmed prior to serving. In the early morning on Thanksgiving Day the turkey is placed in the roaster oven on the counter so there will be plenty of oven space to cook the side dishes before our feast. Also, in the morning the sage herb dressing is made and put in a slow cooker on a low setting for the day. Salad and dinner rolls are prepared just prior to serving. Besides the family togetherness on Thanksgiving Day, I especially love the aromas flowing from the kitchen into the family room while I sip coffee and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! My heart is full of thanks!

Holiday Ornaments

Well, it's October, and of course I'm already thinking about the holidays... and NOT Halloween and NOT Thanksgiving, but rather Christmas! There is always so much to accomplish before the parties and festivities begin. It's actually quite exhausting thinking about shopping, wrapping, decorating inside and out, trimming the tree, planning menus, baking cookies, addressing holiday cards and so much more! The list goes on and on, but I truly love every minute of it!

As I admitted in a previous post, my memory isn't what it used to be! So each year I snap photos of all my decorations so I can refer to them when setting up my holiday displays the following year. I have found this to be very helpful for me, although I always change it up a bit (as I usually have multiple new items to include thanks to the after Christmas clearance sales!).  That being said,  I like being able to see the layout from the previous year and use that as a starting point.

Trimming the Christmas tree is a family event, and everyone must  be present! Holiday tunes play softly in the background, cookies and snacks are served, and the little ones always receive an annual Holiday stuffed animal to top off a very special day! I especially love the conversations that are elicited when one of our special personalized ornaments is unwrapped and ready for hanging on the tree. Thank goodness someone had the bright idea to add names, dates, important events to so many of our treasured ornaments! We have ornaments commemorating our first date, wedding, first home, new home, children, and other beloved family members and friends. Having the names and dates permanently affixed on the ornaments serve as sort of a "cheat sheet," if you will, when the kiddos ask "when did...?"

Personalized Christmas Ornaments by Zoey's Attic

Zoey's Attic Personalized Gifts can help you with your "cheat sheet" by creating for you the sweetest personalized ornaments you could ever imagine. Some designs are made on a 3 inch sized diameter ornament made of fiberglass reinforced plastic. These are treated with a permanent finish that will last as a keepsake on your tree year after year. There are also adorable designs on elegantly shaped ornaments that are made of aluminum. These are super durable and will hold up well with no fear of breaking or deteriorating. And the best part of all this is that any ornament can be personalized with whatever title, dates, or sayings you would like! You can even include a photo on some styles. Zoey's Attic personalized ornaments really do make the most thoughtful and unique holiday gifts.

My Addiction

Don't get excited, it's not what you think. But I do have a confession to make and here it is... I am a chocoholic, cake-aholic, ice cream-aholic, candy-aholic. There, I've admitted my weaknesses! I have an addiction to all things sweet! I'd rather have a cupcake and coffee for breakfast than cereal and orange juice. I'd prefer a bowl (or two!) of chocolate ice cream for lunch rather than a salad. I'd love nothing more than a scrumptious Milky Way candy bar and bowl of M&Ms for dinner instead of steak, potato, and vegetable. Since I have now acknowledged my penchant for sweets, I suppose I'll share with you my all-time favorites list:

1.) Favorite all-time candy is Snickers Candy Bar.

2.) Favorite Ice Cream is Edy's Original Rocky Road.

3.) Favorite cake is Betty Crocker Devil's Food with chocolate icing.

BettyCrocker.com

4.) Favorite Cookie is Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie.

verybestbaking.com

Well, there you have it! Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! So now you might have figured out that Halloween is one of my most very favorite days of the year! Just think, all that candy and it's even free! Halloween evening will come and go and as usual I will stuff myself with candy. I've never been able to stop after just one or two pieces.... voila, I'm addicted!

Halloween is next month and before I am overcome with a sugar high I need to focus on our costumes! Zoey's Attic can help with adorable shirts and bodysuits for baby's first Halloween. They also have the cutest trick or treat bags with designs to match your costume and some glow in the dark too! There are even candy bags with your joke printed on them so you can look at the bag if you forget the punchline! Now that's clever! Can't wait for candy day! Happy Halloween!

Teachers Are Awesome!

We interact with many teachers during our lifetime including our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. From the beginning, these treasured family members have been there to guide us along life's glorious and sometimes twisted and complicated paths. When the time comes for formal education, some parents may choose home schooling. Many others will make the decision to send their little ones to a traditional preschool and then off to grade school and high school, either public or private. As an adult you will partner with many teachers who will help you educate your child with the information and skills needed to ensure success, not only in present day activities but also in the future as a contributing member of society.

I owe everything to my teachers! Without a doubt my instructors have proven to be exemplary role models and have not only taught the essential reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also instilled the integrity and values required for a productive and satisfying existence. I am incredibly grateful to all the men and women whom have taught me with patience and kindness so many invaluable lessons. Thank you to my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Hamm, for your hugs and consoling words when I cried because I made my leaf man upside down. A grateful heart to Sister Perpetua for demanding I learn my multiplication tables with rapid fire. Special thanks to Sister John Kevin for letting me realize it is OK to be "me" especially during those awkward teen years. Many thanks, also, to Mr. Mullen for teaching me that there is good in everyone you encounter, even if you sometimes have to search for it. I could go on and on, but you get the point.... my awesome teachers over the years have in countless ways had a positive impact on my life, and I am so thankful for all they have done to help mold me into the person I am today!

So if you've had or currently have a teacher whom has helped you travel along life's special and intriguing journey, be sure to take time to say "thank you."  On that note, many thanks to all our teachers for making our LOVE baseball tee our all time number one best selling item! Everyone at Zoey's Attic is truly grateful for your support!

Thank You Awesome Teachers!

Family Fall Traditions

The Autumnal Equinox, aka the first day of Fall, arrives here in ten days! The celestial equator is the imaginary north to south line in the sky above the Earth's equator. Fall in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the moment the Sun crosses this line. In St. Louis, my home town, Fall arrives this year on September 23rd at precisely 3:22 a.m. CDT.

There is so much to love about this season that will soon enough usher us into the cold of winter. The cooler, but not yet frigid, days and evenings are so welcome following the extreme heat and humidity of summer. I so much love the color changes in the Fall foliage. I even enjoy raking all the fallen leaves! Fall fashions are my favorite too, especially wrapping up in a cozy warm sweater with a cup of coffee and a good read. I could go on and on proclaiming my praise of Autumn, but instead I'll share with you a few of our family traditions. Just as we have certain Holiday customs, we also have established certain family rituals that we observe year after year. On this list are family outings that include:

- An annual trip to the apple orchards is always at the top of the list for things to do in the Fall. Nearly everyone I know enjoys a weekend afternoon picking apples at Eckert's. The main farm and orchards are located in Belleville, IL, but our family prefers the orchards at Grafton Farm. They also have a Country Store offering family favorites such as apple and pumpkin butter and apple cider too.

- Of course it just wouldn't be Fall without a trip to the pumpkin patch for some Pumpkinland fun! The farms near our home all offer hay castles, hay rides, ziplines, play areas with large slides and farm animals for the children to pet and even sometimes feed. Our favorite pumpkin patch is at Thies Farm and everyone looks forward to our annual outing to select the perfect Halloween pumpkins for our home!

- Autumn is the perfect time of year for a day trip to a State Park for a picnic lunch and hike in the woods. A trip to Pere Marquette State Park, just outside of Grafton, IL, is always on our Fall agenda! The sites along the drive are magnificent. On one side of the road is the mighty Mississippi River and the opposite side are the river bluffs covered with trees, bushes, shrubs, and wild flowers all gloriously displaying brilliant Fall colors. Following a picnic lunch it's time to stop at the Visitor's Center. There are Park Interpreters available to guide you on a hike. They share a wealth of information about the vegetation and natural wildlife, history of the Park, and even stories about the native Americans who once inhabited the land that is now Pere Marquette State Park.

- Finally, a trip to the Missouri Botanical Gardens, also known as Shaw's Garden, is a priority during each and every season of the year. The Gardens were originally the estate of businessman Henry Shaw and were opened to the public in 1859. The flowers are always spectacular and are breathtakingly beautiful during the Autumn season! There  is also a Children's Garden with play areas and educational exhibits. A stroll through the Botanical Gardens is definitely a highlight any day of the year!

Well, there you have it! So what are your favorite family traditions for Fall?

Bucket List

Do you have a bucket list? Well I do! Earlier this summer my friend and I were at The Muny Opera in St. Louis enjoying a beautiful production of Irving Berlin's "Holiday Inn." If you are ever in St. Louis during the summer months and you like theater then a trip to The Muny is an absolute must! It's America's oldest and largest outdoor musical theater. This year was its 97th season and plans are already underway for a fabulous celebration of The Muny's 100th anniversary! The sloping amphitheater contains 10,800 stadium style seats. Anyone and everyone can enjoy the musical productions of The Muny because unique to this theater is a section of free seating comprising the last nine rows or about 1,500 seats of the venue. As a young girl, my mom, siblings and myself would enjoy The Muny shows from the free seats which then fostered the beginning of my long time appreciation for the arts.

Still to this day I especially love the shows with lots of dancing, specifically tap style! When I was younger I did take ballet and tap dance lessons, but only for a short while. The dance class times were in conflict with my basketball schedule, and being in a family with older athletic brothers it meant I would be playing basketball rather than dancing. And I truthfully admit, I loved playing basketball more than I ever loved dancing.  However, as the years passed I always wished I had learned to tap dance. So this desire was eventually placed on my "bucket list" of things to accomplish during my lifetime. Interestingly, while enjoying "Holiday Inn" my friend mentioned learning to tap dance was on her "bucket list" of things to do! So at that moment we decided we would find a tap class for adult beginners.  The next day we searched the internet and most of the local dance studios only had tap classes for children and youth dancers. A few studios offered adult tap lessons but the cost per class was outrageous. Then the Continuing Education catalog from St. Louis Community College arrived in the mailbox! And there it was... an adult beginners tap dance class, 8 week session, nearby, reasonably priced! We applied the very first day of open registration! Good news, we're in!

Now I need to find tap shoes, and the hunt is on. I've located several online shops that sell adult size tap shoes, but unlike buying personalized shirts from Zoey's Attic, I really need to try on the shoes before I purchase them. At my age my feet hurt and comfort is top priority. I know one thing for sure, I won't be getting the tap style with a heel like the dancers at The Muny wear for the dance numbers. Instead, they will be either flat T-strap Mary Jane shoes or the black patent leather style with a ribbon tie bow. I can't wait to find them and get to our first lesson!

So here are a few of the other items I've also had on my bucket list:

- See the Eiffel Tower: Done! Magnificent!

- Become a certified scuba diver: Done! Don't like it and will never scuba dive again. Although "under the sea" is an incredibly gorgeous sight, I really don't want to know in advance if "Jaws" or any other creature is lurking nearby. I'd rather it just happen without any prior knowledge of the impending attack!

- Overcome my fear of snakes: Never, ever will this happen!

So what is on your bucket list?

Grandparents Are Special

While I truly believe the best job in the world is being a mom, I must confess being a Grandparent must truly be awesome! I can't really imagine how anything could be better than being called Mommy, but I think being called "Grandma" or "Nana" or "Mimi" would be pretty special too! All the joy (and sometimes tears) watching the little ones grow up.. the excitement of each milestone from birth, kindergarten, grade and high school graduations, college, weddings, and new babies and then one day we magically become the Grandparent. When I look at my own Grandparents I am so grateful for their love and the knowledge and guidance they have imparted on myself, my siblings, and my cousins. I hope to someday have the same impact on my own grandchildren. There was great comfort in always knowing someone special would be there for me when my parents weren't able to be there due to work schedules, or illness, or whatever the circumstance may have been at the time. I have always known my Grandparents loved me as deeply as my own parents. So whenever I finally do become Grandma, I hope my children will rely on me to fill in the gaps when needed. So when mommy and daddy can't get away from work, please call on me to pick up the kiddos from day care, or school, or even scouts or ball practice. And when the little ones are wanting a special gift for birthday or the holidays and you can't seem to find it, let me know and I'll find it for you. And when the children are sick, please ask me to care for them while you are working or even just running your errands. I want to be the Grandparents who are at the grandkids' school play hours in advance just to get the best seat in the house!

National Grandparents Day began in the United States in 1978, and this year it will be celebrated on Sunday, September 13th.Three of my Grandparents had already passed, and  even though back then we didn't have an official day to celebrate Grandparents, I hope they always felt mine and my siblings' love and appreciation. My Grandparents' homes were filled with happiness and laughter, and there are so many special memories I have that will always be a part of me. Be sure to let your Grandparents know this year the special place they hold in your heart. Zoey's Attic can help with a personalized and totally unique Grandparent's Day gift designed just for your very own dear Grandma and Grandpa.

Allergies or Common Cold?

The common cold is never fun, but seriously it's no picnic when you catch one during the hot and humid summer months.  During the Spring and Fall seasons I can always count on a runny nose, itchy and watering eyes, continual sneezing, and the ever consuming headache caused by allergies. That's just a fact of life for me and so many other allergy sufferers. When the pollen and mold spore levels increase so do the symptoms caused by these allergens. Allergic rhinitis, or better known as hay fever, is caused by an heightened immune response to pollen grains and other substances such as mold spores. The irritation begins during the Spring months when the trees, grasses and plants have awakened from their winter slumber and release their pollen. The counts are worse in the morning hours and on windy days. During the late summer and into the autumn season, pollen from ragweed is the major cause of sneezing and sniffling.

It's mid summer now and not really the time of year for my allergies to rev up, but somehow I suppose I've gotten a case of the common cold. The symptoms are similar with the usual nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. The nasal discharge caused by allergies is typically thin and clear, while it often becomes yellowish or greenish in color with a simple cold. However, I'm not itching which is a plus! But on the downside, my throat is scratchy, my body aches, and I have a low grade fever. These additional symptoms are all associated with a cold and not those nasty allergens. According to Medicinenet.com, the common cold is the most frequent reoccurring sickness in the world.  It's also known as nasopharyngitis and is caused by a virus. The common cold will typically run its course in about a week to 10 days.  The virus does not respond to an antibiotic and there is no magical cure. So while you're suffering from the common cold here are five suggestions for relieving your discomfort:

1.  Get plenty of rest.

2.  Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

3.  Gargle with warm salt water to soothe and relieve the pain of a sore throat. The Mayo Clinic suggests 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8 ounce glass of warm water.

4.  Utilize over the counter medications such as decongestants to relieve nasal symptoms, throat lozenges and cough syrups to quiet the coughing spells. Do not, however, give throat lozenges or hard candies to children younger than 3 or 4 years of age to suck on as these can be a choking hazard. Use a throat spray such as Chloraseptic Kids Sore Throat Spray instead. Also, give Tylenol or Ibuprofen to reduce fever and body aches.  Be sure to read package labels regarding recommended medicinal dosages for infants, children, and adults.

5. Consult your physician for additional guidance and especially if symptoms persist.

Well it's time for more meds! Can't wait for the Fall allergy season to begin! NOT!

It's Hot!

Baby it's hot outside! Summers in St. Louis can be sweltering. The humidity along with the high temperatures can make you feel like you are suffocating! It's so hard to get a good breath on days like this when the air feels so thick! So you're sweating everywhere and wondering just what to do to keep yourself and the kiddos comfortable. Here are five suggestions to help you stay cool on a warm summer day:

1. If the children are old enough to shop (without it being too much of a hassle for you), then go to your local shopping mall or department store. Start early looking for school supplies and back to school clothing. And of course, don't forget to pick out the perfect kid backpack for school. Backpacks featuring the Disney characters from Frozen, Cinderella, and Cars are still popular with the little ones. And of course the superheroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and Batman are always best sellers. Then go back to the store on Tax Free weekend to make your purchases. In Missouri, the annual Back To School Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 7th and runs through Sunday, August 9th. Certain back to school purchases such as school supplies, clothing, computers, and other items may be exempt from sales tax during this time period. You can also check out the blog Passion For Savings for their list of Back To School Tax Free Weekend dates and other participating states.

2. Spend the afternoon at the neighborhood pool. If you don't have access to a public or private swimming pool then fill a small plastic pool or plastic storage bin with water for the kids to play in and cool off. And if you don't have a kiddie pool just turn on your sprinkler and let the kiddos run through the waterfall. Or just let your children squirt one another with cool water from a hose. But you'll want to be sure to protect your little ones from the suns hot rays by covering them with sunscreen and remember to reapply often.

3. Instead of staying indoors all day and getting cabin fever, take a drive in your air conditioned car or van. Everyone will stay cool and the little ones often will nap in comfort in the car seat. Stop for an ice cream for an extra special treat on a very hot day. Many ice cream shops have drive thru windows too so you don't have to worry about getting everyone unbuckled from the car seat.

4. Spend the day at a favorite children's indoor museum. If you live in or near St. Louis you might want to take a trip to the St. Louis Science Center where the offer numerous programs and activities for children. Another fun place to visit on a warm St. Louis day is the The Magic House which is also known as the St. Louis Children's Museum. Kids and adults both love the many fun and educational activities offered at the Magic House which is located in Kirkwood, MO.

5. Lastly, just stay home! Make it a movie day! Draw the curtains, turn the lights down, make popcorn, and put on a favorite family movie. Better yet, let everyone choose their favorite movie and have a movie marathon day. My favorite movie is Beauty and the Beast! What's your?

Whatever your plans are for these lazy, crazy hot days of summer, stay safe and have lots of fun!
