The Hunt Is Near!

I love hosting the Easter Egg Hunt! It's one of my favorite events of the year! I like to switch it up occasionally to add some variety to the annual egg roll. Some years it's the basic hunt with eggs hidden inside and outside. Other times it becomes a treasure hunt with maps. And sometimes the eggs have been personalized with the participant's name and you can only collect the eggs that were made especially for you.

First you need to prepare your eggs. I prefer the hard boil egg recipe from BettyCrocker.com and have used it successfully for many, many years. The cold water method with the eggs layered along the bottom of the saucepan is so easy!

After the eggs have cooled you then need to think about ways to decorate them. At least a dozen or so eggs (depending on how many kiddos and adults will be participating in the hunt) are dyed in basic colors from a simple dye kit found at the local Target, Family Dollar, or Kmart. Then have the kiddos use their imagination (with some guidance of course) and let them decorate the remaining eggs. The little ones love to cover the eggs with stickers, and glitter is also very popular! It sure makes a mess, but the eggs are so pretty! Parentmap.com has an excellent article featuring 20 ideas for dyeing and decorating Easter eggs.

In addition to the hard boiled eggs our hunt also has plastic eggs filled with a surprise.  Your local Dollar Store has many small toys to choose from including tiny Easter figurines, rings, and bouncy balls. Candy, coins, and even dollar bills can also be hidden in the eggs. Another idea is to include a piece of paper with a number on it that corresponds to a larger prize such as a book or stuffed bunny rabbit or Easter chick.

Now it's time to plan the hunt! Options include a basic hunt with every kid for himself or herself! Or, you can make a predetermined number of eggs and personalize with a name. The expert egg hunter can only take an egg with his or her name on it.  Color coding eggs is a super way to ensure all the kiddos get an equal number of eggs. Each child is given a color and this is the only color that can be added to their basket. If an egg is found in another color the hunter can choose to leave it hidden or give it to the kiddo collecting that color. If you have older children a nighttime hunt is a lot of fun. You can purchase glow-in-the-dark plastic Easter eggs online from a variety of stores including OrientalTrading.com. A plastic egg will also glow in the dark if a glow stick is snapped and placed inside the egg. Also be sure to have flashlights available for the egg hunters.

One of my all-time favorite hunts is the reverse hunt. The kiddos hide the Easter eggs and then the adults find them! The little ones have so much fun cheering on mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, aunts and uncles (of course, this hunt is in addition to the children's egg hunt!).

Will you host an Easter Egg Hunt this year? If so, will it be a traditional hunt or will you do something different?

Festive Holiday Drink Ideas Needed!

Red Wine Sangria Punch
So I'm thinking ahead to Thanksgiving and I need your suggestions. I love hosting holidays in my home, and I especially love decorating the holiday table. I also try to use my "good" china, silver, and crystal whenever possible. I figure I didn't put it on my wedding registry just so I can look at it setting so pretty in the china cabinet, so why not use it! And, over the years I have collected many festive centerpieces and serving dishes which add so much to the holiday table decorum. The menus are basically the same year after year except for the varying (and sometimes experimental!) side dishes. Turkey is always served on Thanksgiving, filet mignon steaks and roast beef are the main entrees for Christmas, and Easter brings a variety of barbecued meats including chicken, ribs, and hamburgers for the kiddos. For the accompanying side dishes I like to make recipes that can be prepared in advance, refrigerated overnight, and then baked, microwaved, or tossed just prior to serving. This plan allows me extra time to visit with our guests. Additionally, another time saver is having an alcoholic punch for the adults and a non-alcoholic drink for the children (and adults too!) readily available for the guests. These drinks can be made in batches ahead of the big day and also allows for easy serving of drinks. Anyone can just help themselves when a refill is needed. I've served a red wine sangria punch for Christmas and a white wine sangria punch garnished with lemons, lime, and strawberries at Easter. The kiddos always request frozen non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris which I keep in the freezer year round! I also make sure to have several cans of whipped cream available to top off the frozen daiquiri. And depending on the holiday, the kids also love when festive stirrers and straws are included with the drink.  The local Dollar Tree Store is a good source for holiday drink accessories.  I've even found adorable bunny glasses to serve the frozen drinks. They look so cute when topped with a mound of whipped cream!  So this year  I'm looking for a special alcoholic and also a non-alcoholic drink appropriate for the Thanksgiving holiday that can be made in advance and can easily be served. I did find a recipe for an apple cider punch that looks interesting and tasty, but would love your suggestions too. And, if you're also looking for a Fall themed shirt or bodysuit and leg warmer set for your little one for the Thanksgiving holiday, Zoey's Attic can help!

It's Tradition!

Angel Dear Bunny Pillow
When my husband and I married we each brought  family traditions that have passed from generation to  generation. Some of our Easter customs were similar  such as searching for our hidden Easter baskets  early on Easter morn followed by church services.  Then our immediate families ate a light brunch in anticipation of a larger family gathering later in the day.  The afternoon brought the annual Easter egg hunt with real dyed eggs along with plastic eggs filled with small toys or coins.  Dinner was always barbecued chicken, ribs and hamburgers and mom's potato salad.  An Easter barbecue was the perfect way to usher in Spring and the upcoming summer season. These were the Easter Day commonalities our families shared. We also had a few things our families did differently, and we have added them to our own unique family traditions. When I was a little girl my mom would make the most beautiful Easter bonnet for me, and it was always a  perfect match for my Easter dress. I can still remember how excited I was to see the Easter hat my mom had created just for me so I have continued this tradition with my daughter.  My mother-in-law always made sure everyone's basket in her family was filled with chocolate covered marshmallow eggs and had a huge solid chocolate Easter bunny as the centerpiece.  The bunny was always from a well known chocolatier and my husband reports it was divine! To everyone's benefit we have continued this tradition as well! Another difference between our family celebrations was that the Easter Bunny always left the kiddos in my family an Easter plush such as a bunny, lamb, or Easter chick in addition to our basket of candy.  It was a sweet keepsake year after year, many of which I still have and use currently as Easter decorations in my home.  This is a tradition I have especially loved and continue to this day.  So, if you are looking for a cuddly soft Easter gift for your little ones Zoey's Attic can help. Zoey offers adorable Angel Dear lamb lovies, bunny curved pillows, and a sweet ducky napping blanket.  All of these items can be personalized with an embroidered name making it an "egg"stra special Easter gift. Whatever your Easter traditions, these are the special gifts that link the generations.

The Hunt!

My First Easter Onesie
In less than three weeks it will be Easter. I'm so excited for the
traditional family egg hunt that always takes place following church services on Easter Sunday. It seems to rain every other Easter, so this year it should be a sunny day! The Easter Egg Hunt is so much fun whether it takes place in the yard or in the house due to inclement weather conditions. And, I love to mix the beautifully decorated 'real' hard boiled eggs with plastic artificial eggs filled with Easter treats for the kiddos and (and old!) alike! The day is topped off with a delicious family meal. Most families I know serve ham, but not this family. No matter what the weather is on Easter, we always have a family barbeque! It's not only Easter Sunday, but also the start of the Spring barbeque season for us.  Ribs, chicken, and hamburgers are on the menu along with Grandma's potato salad (best ever!) and corn on the cob. I'm salivating now just thinking about it!  So have lots of fun on Easter, and if you should need a custom shirt for the hunt or maybe for a special family announcement, Zoey's Attic can help.

Easter Cuddlies

Ducky Curved Pillow
Pink Lamb Lovie/Blanket
Easter is rather late this year, April 24th to be exact.  This allows extra time for the Easter Bunny to figure out what to put in the baby's basket.  I've got some really sweet and super cuddly baby gifts that would be perfect.  The baby blankets and curved pillows are so soft I want one for myself!  Optional embroidered personalization is also available.
